Are cruciferous vegetables bad for thyroid?

My sister recently got diagnosed with a thyroid issue, and someone told her to avoid cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower. Is this true, that they are bad for thyroid health? Should I also be careful since it runs in the family?

I also have thyroid issues and was so scared of eating cabbage and broccoli! But my doctor told me that cooking them thoroughly actually deactivates the goitrogens that affect thyroid function. Just don't eat them raw in salads and you should be perfectly fine.

Well, the good news is you finally have a medical excuse to avoid broccoli! But honestly, unless you are eating bucketfuls of raw cabbage every single day, it won't harm your thyroid. Just cook your veggies well and you're good to go.

I track my nutrition daily and researched this quite a bit. Cooking or steaming cruciferous veggies reduces their goitrogenic effect significantly, making them safe for most thyroid patients. It's still smart to monitor your TSH levels regularly and consult your doctor.

I got so anxious after reading online that cauliflower is bad for thyroid, and I immediately stopped eating it. Did anyone else experience their thyroid levels fluctuating because of these veggies? I think I'll go get my blood test done this week to be sure.

I agree that cooking them makes a big difference. Just ensure you are getting enough iodine in your diet and discuss any doubts with your physician.
