Are black people less likely to get skin cancer?

I was discussing skin health with a friend, and she mentioned that people with darker skin tones are less prone to skin cancer. Is there any truth to this statement? I thought everyone could get it, regardless of skin colour.

I am not a doctor, but I have read that higher melanin levels do offer some natural protection against UV rays. However, everyone can still get sun damage, so wearing sunscreen is a habit I stick to regardless.

I completely understand how stressful it can be to read up on cancer risks and try to figure out what applies to you. Yes, statistically the risk is lower due to melanin, but skin cancer can still happen to anyone, so please don't let guard down.

My elders always said that darker skin doesn't burn easily in our hot summers, but my dermatologist explained that skin cancer is still a risk and often diagnosed late in darker skin. It is best to trust the doctors and wear sunscreen daily.

Reading about cancer online always gives me so much anxiety. Yes, melanin helps lower the risk, but they can still get skin cancer, often in areas like palms or soles where it's hard to notice. It's so scary, so regular checks are best.

While melanin provides some natural shield, anyone can get skin issues. Just like I monitor my thyroid regularly, keeping an eye on any changing moles or spots and showing them to a dermatologist is very important.

Melanin is like a built-in umbrella, but even umbrellas leak in heavy rain! So yes, the risk is lower, but nobody is completely bulletproof from the sun. Keep that sunscreen handy anyway.

I totally get it, trying to understand these medical facts can be really confusing. While melanin does offer a natural shield, skin cancer can affect any skin tone, so protection is still key for everyone.
